First of all, think about your site's users. How are they going to navigate through your site and use it? You want to make your site easy to understand and easy to get around. What types of colors and fonts will you use to help them navigate and go deeper into your site's content? What type of navigation menu will you use: drop down menus, left-hand or right-hand navigation sidebars, etc?

You want your visitors to be able to get around easily and you want keep them on your site for as long as possible, therefore you need to ensure that they can navigate with ease. If your visitors can navigate efficiently, so will the spiders that come to visit and index your site.
Secondly, you need to think about is the search engines. While it is the job of your SEOn specialist to make the most of your web pages there are several things that you should consider during the design phase:
- 1. What type of site architecture are you going to use?
- 2. Will the navigation put in place for your users affect navigation for the search engines?
- 3. What do the search engines want to see in your site and what will they reward or penalize your site for?
- 4. Do you already have content that you can use on your pages, will it need to be SEO edited or will you have to have it written from scratch?
- 5. Will you be using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript, and be W3C compliant?
Most websites use straight HTML coding to build the pages. This can be used in conjunction with CSS and other compliant coding. There are also technologies such as FLASH that have become popular that you can use to make your website more interactive and visually appealing.
